Safe Driving and Trust Act Call-in Script

Hello. My name is _____. I live in your district, and I am speaking to you as a person of faith. I am asking you to support two bills which will have a major impact for immigrants in Massachusetts.

Please support both the Safe Driving bill (H.2985) AND The Massachusetts Trust Act (S.1258 / H.1228). I believe our communities are safer if people can get a license to drive in MA regardless of immigration status. Immigrants will have to pass the driver test and get insurance, which makes us all safer. The Safe Driving bill will provide needed relief in our communities, which includes many hard working immigrant families too.

The Trust Act would limit the impact of programs like “Secure Communities”now called the “Priority Enforcement Program”, which blurs the line between local police and immigration officers. It would rebuild trust between police and immigrants, and would help protect localities from liability for violating residents’ constitutional rights.

It’s crucial that the legislature hold hearings for both the Safe Driving bill (H.2985) AND The Massachusetts Trust Act (S.1258 / H.1228) in June. We need to do everything possible to get these bills out of their respective committees.

I am asking you to please share your constituent’s concerns with:

(IF YOU ARE SPEAKING WITH YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE):
Rep. William Straus, the Transportation Committee co-chair, to ask him to support the Safe Driving bill (H.2985) – to move it out of committee, so that the legislature can vote on it; AND
with Rep. John Fernandes, the Judiciary Committee co-chair, and Rep Harold Naughton, co-chair of the Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, to ask each of them to support The Massachusetts Trust Act (S.1258 / H.1228) – to move it out of the committee so that the legislature can vote on it.

(IF YOU ARE SPEAKING WITH YOUR STATE SENATOR):
Sen. Thomas McGee, co-chair of the Transportation Committee, to ask him to support the Safe Driving bill (H.2985) – to move it out of committee, so that the legislature can vote on it; AND
with Senator William Brownsberger, co-chair of the Judiciary Committee and Senator James Timilty, co-chair of the Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, to ask each of them to support The Massachusetts Trust Act (S.1258 / H.1228) – to move it out of the committee so that the legislature can vote on it.

As a person of faith I see immigrant justice as a moral issue and a human rights issue. I believe these two bills will help to restore immigrant justice in our communities.
